Basic Skills

The Basic Skills examination includes three subtests: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Candidates must take and pass all three subtests to qualify for a Minnesota license. You may take one, two, or all three subtests at one test appointment.

Format Computer-based test (CBT); multiple-choice and written assignments
  • Reading: 48 multiple-choice questions
  • Writing: 33 multiple-choice questions and 2 written assignments
  • Mathematics: 50 multiple-choice questions
Time
  • Reading: one hour
  • Writing:
    • Through August 2012, one hour and 30 minutes
    • Effective September 2012, one hour and 45 minutes
  • Mathematics: one hour and 15 minutes
Test Dates By appointment, year round. Test appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Check seat availability.
Test Sites CBT sites are located in Minnesota, nationwide, and in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Canada. Locate a test center.
Passing Score Set by Minnesota Board of Teaching; examinees must pass all three subtests.
