Directions for Listening Comprehension Questions
The first section of this test (questions 1–24) contains multiple-choice questions that involve listening to an audio recording. Each question will be presented in three parts.
First, you will hear the question number. When you hear the number, you should refer to the corresponding question.
Next, there will be a 20-second pause during which you should familiarize yourself with the question.
Finally, you will hear a listening passage. Listen carefully to the passage. Unless otherwise indicated, each listening passage will be read twice.
After the listening passage, select the best response to the question presented.
For the practice questions that follow, a written transcript of the audio recording has been provided. Note that on the actual test, the transcript will not appear. Instead, examinees will listen to audio recordings. During the test the recordings cannot be stopped nor can any section be replayed.

female: Ja, einen schönen guten Morgen, Herr Schmidt! So früh auf?
male: Ja, ja, Frau Becker. Heute bin ich wieder dran, den Frühstückstisch für die Kinder zu decken. Renate musste sehr früh ins Büro.
female: Na, dann, was hätten Sie denn gerne?
male: Je zwei Hörnchen, Laugenbrezel, und Apfelschnitten, bitte. Aber sagen Sie, wenn's ums Frühaufstehen geht, da ist Ihr Mann wohl der Frühste, nicht wahr?
female: Ja, das kann man wohl sagen. Morgens um drei ist er schon hier und arbeitet.

Question 1
1. Herr Schmidt muss heute für das Frühstück sorgen, weil:
- er Hunger hat und vor der Arbeit etwas essen will.
- die Kinderpflegerin Renate in Urlaub ist.
- er alleinstehend ist und für die Kinder sorgen muss.
- seine Frau Renate früh zur Arbeit musste.
Answer to question 1
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0001) Mr. Schmidt tells the salesperson that somebody named Renate had to leave for work very early ("Renate musste sehr früh ins Büro."). Since Renate had to leave the house to go to an office, she is most likely not the children's child care provider, and, since it is implied that Renate often takes care of the children's breakfast, it can be concluded that Renate is Mr. Schmidt's wife and that he is responsible for preparing breakfast for their children today because she is working ("Heute bin ich wieder dran, den Frühstückstisch für die Kinder zu decken.").

Question 2
2. In Dialog sprechen reden Frau Becker und Herr Schmidt miteinander als:
- Angestellte und Chef.
- Nachbarn.
- Verkäuferin und Kunde.
- Verwandte.
Answer to question 2
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: C. (Objective 0002) The female speaker asks Mr. Schmidt politely what he would like ("Na, dann, was hätten Sie denn gerne?"), and he responds politely with a list of items ("Je zwei Hörnchen, Laugenbrezel und Apfelschnitten, bitte."). Based on the formal register and the content of the conversation, it is clear that Mr. Smith is a customer making purchases in a bakery and that the female speaker is the salesperson helping him.

Question 3
3. Aus dem Dialog kann man schließen, dass Frau Beckers Ehemann wahrscheinlich:
- Bäcker ist.
- Schlachter ist.
- Gemüsehändler ist.
- Koch ist.
Answer to question 3
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0002) After talking to the salesperson about being at the shop so early, Herr Schmidt comments that the salesperson's husband must be the earliest riser of them all. ("Aber sagen Sie, wenn's um Frühaufstehen geht, da ist Ihr Mann wohl der Frühste, nicht wahr?"). Since the salesperson agrees and refers to the shop where she is currently selling Mr. Schmidt breakfast pastries as the same place at which her husband starts work at 3:00 A.M. ("Morgens um drei ist er schon hier und arbeitet"), it can be concluded that baking is Mr. Becker's profession.

start italics *(one male speaker—radio announcement) end italics

Passage For Questions 22, 23, and 24

Answer to question 22
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: B. (Objective 0001) The passage reports that the mayor of Munich officially kicks off Oktoberfest in mid-September. A short time later, the speaker brings up the disconnect between the name of the festival and the month in which it takes place ("Vielleicht fragen Sie sich, warum das Fest 'Oktoberfest' heißt, wenn es hauptsächlich im September stattfindet."). The remainder of the passage focuses on the origins of the festival, how it originally took place in October, and why it has since changed to a September start date but retains its original name.

Passage For Questions 25, 26, and 27

Answer to question 25
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0003) The young man wandering about in the world does not need to concern himself with the quality of a restaurant ("Wirtshaus"), or even whether he needs to go to one for provisions, because his magic table provides him with the best imaginable food and drink ("Schüsseln mit Gesottenem und Gebratenem ... und ein großes Glas mit rotem Wein.").

Question 26
26. Aus der Passage kann man schließen, dass der Meister dem Gesellen zum Abschied den magischen Tisch schenkt, weil:
- ihm das Aussehen des Tisches zu alltäglich vorkommt.
- er den Gesellen für seine gute Arbeit belohnen will.
- ihm der Tisch für die vielen Speisen zu klein ist.
- er bald wieder einen neuen Lehrling bekommen wird.
Answer to question 26
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: B. (Objective 0004) The table, although it looks very common, has extraordinary qualities ("gute Eigenschaften"). Question 27
27. Der unterstrichene Ausdruck „dass einem das Herz lachte” bedeutet in diesem Zusammenhang, dass:
- das gute Essen den Gesellen glücklich macht.
- ein reiches Essen Brennen in der Brust verursacht.
- der rote Wein den Gesellen betrunken macht.
- ein guter Wein zu einem gesunden Leben gehört.
Answer to question 27
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0004) The passage describes all the wonderful things that happen when the table is given the command, "Tischlein, deck dich," and the underlined expression is used to describe what happens when one sees the great quantity and quality of the provisions. Passage For Questions 31 and 32
Lesen Sie die folgende Passage aus Faust (1808) von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; dann beantworten Sie die zwei anschließenden Fragen.
ABEND
Ein kleines reinliches Zimmer.
MARGARETE (ihre Zöpfe flechtend und aufbindend):
Ich gäb was drum, wenn ich nur wüsst;
Wer heut der Herr gewesen ist.
Er sah gewiss recht wacker aus
Und ist aus einem edlen Haus;
In diesem Kerker welche Seligkeit!
(Er wirft sich auf den ledernen Sessel am Bette.)
[…]
MEPHISTOPHELES (kommt):
Geschwind! Ich seh sie unten kommen.
FAUST:
Fort! Fort! Ich kehre nimmermehr!
MEPHISTOPHELES:
Hier ist ein Kästchen leidlich schwer,
Ich hab's wo anders hergenommen.
Stellt's hier nur immer in den Schrein!
Ich schwör Euch, ihr vergehn die Sinnen;
Ich tat Euch Sächelchen hinein,
Um eine andre zu gewinnen.
Zwar Kind ist Kind, und Spiel ist Spiel.
FAUST:
Ich weiß nicht, soll ich?
MEPHISTOPHELES:
Fragt Ihr viel?

Passage For Questions 34, 35, and 36

Passage For Questions 37, 38, and 39

Question 38
Answer to question 38
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0003) At the end of the passage, the narrator describes arriving at the university with new clothes that turn out to be considered strange by his fellow students. The previous part of the passage serves as an explanation as to why this is the case: that his father is parsimonious and likes to hire servants who can do double duty ("... Bediente[n] ..., welche die Stunden gut anwenden mussten, indem sie nicht allein ihre Livreien, sondern auch die Kleider für Vater und Kinder zu fertigen... hatten ..."). These servants can sew well but are not so good at tailoring and, because his father keeps suits forever, only have old-fashioned models ("... alten Zuschnitt und Verzierungen") at their disposal, which do not fit in with the narrator's new surroundings.

Letter For Questions 40, 41, 42, and 43

Passage For Questions 44, 45, and 46
Question 44
Answer to question 44
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0003) The passage reports that Germans admire top athletes but that they also participate in sports themselves through local sports clubs ("Die meisten Deutschen, die Sport treiben, sind Mitglieder in einem Sportverein."). The passage also describes the origins of organized sports in Germany in the nineteenth century ("[Ludwig] Jahn ... wollte durch das Turnen die ... Stärke der Deutschen fördern, damit sie im Kampf gegen die napoleonische Armee bestehen konnten.").

- mit viel Lärm.
- ohne viel Hilfe.
- ganz schnell.
- ganz knapp.
Answer to question 46
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0004) The expression "mit Ach und Krach" used in conjunction with an action indicates that someone is just barely and with great exertion able to meet a challenge. It is used in the passage to highlight the excitement of watching a favorite athlete pull off a narrow victory in an Olympic event ("[die Nation] jubelt, wenn ein [Lieblingsathlet] gerade noch mit Ach und Krach gewinnt.").

Question 47
47. Welches ist die richtige Reihenfolge der Ereignisse?
- Jörg erhält eine E-Mail und schreibt dann an den Sekretär.
- Der Sekretär verfasst eine E-Mail und automatisiert die Adressen.
- Jörg schreibt eine E-Mail und bekommt dann ein Rundschreiben.
- Der Sekretär verschickt eine E-Mail und denkt dann an Datenschutz.
Answer to question 47
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0003) Jörg's reason for writing this complaint is that he received a political newsletter via email that listed all the recipients. He wanted to express his anger about this invasion of privacy ("Hinsichtlich des Datenschutzes ist dies doch überaus bedenklich."). The correct order of events is that Jörg received the email and then wrote to the party secretary who had sent it.

Question 48
48. Welches Adjektiv beschreibt am besten Jörgs Stimmung?
- traurig
- verärgert
- begeistert
- deprimiert
Answer to question 48
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: B. (Objective 0004) Jörg complains that the email he received has invaded his privacy because it visibly lists all recipients. He also states that he does not wish any affiliation with the political party in question to be made public. The language he uses ("Was mich aber enorm stört ...", "Es geht doch nicht an ...") further indicates his anger, as does his insertion of "nicht" into the normally friendly formulaic greeting at the end of the email ("Mit nicht so freundlichen Grüßen").

Question 49
49. When speaking to a beginning language learner in the target language, the most appropriate way to provide comprehensible input would be to:
- pause frequently to allow the learner time to process what was said.
- follow a written script available to the learner.
- refer to a list of vocabulary words that are related to the topic of the conversation.
- support meaning through the use of gestures and facial expressions.
Answer to question 49
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0005) According to Stephen Krashen, comprehensible input can be provided using a combination of means, including physical clues such as gestures and facial expressions, that may help a language learner understand communication in the target language.

Question 50
50. A teacher in an intermediate-level German class would like to show students a target-language television program that requires a slightly higher level of language mastery than the students have achieved at this point. Which of the following strategies would best foster comprehensible input in this situation?
- asking a native German speaker to translate important segments of the program into English
- providing closed captioning in the target language to accompany the audio to the program
- pausing after short segments of the program frequently to allow students to process new information
- showing the same program repeatedly until students understand all segments
Answer to question 50
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: B. (Objective 0005) Authentic, natural speech is often rapid, and it is difficult for language learners to understand every word. Captions are the best option for increasing how much of the program learners can understand because they give the most support for the spoken words.
Correct Response: B. (Objective 0005) Authentic, natural speech is often rapid, and it is difficult for language learners to understand every word. Captions are the best option for increasing how much of the program learners can understand because they give the most support for the spoken words.
Question 51
51. An English speaker learning German is learning perfect tense constructions and produces the sentence, "Ich habe seit letztem Jahr Deutsch gestudiert." This error is most likely due to:
- overgeneralization.
- code-switching.
- first-language interference.
- using a false cognate.
Answer to question 51
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0005) Learners typically overgeneralize newly learned grammatical rules, applying the rules not only to regular examples but also to irregular cases that are exceptions to the rules. This phenomenon occurs in the early stages of both first- and second-language acquisition. In the example above, the learner added the prefix "ge-" to the stem of the verb, which is the rule applied to regular/weak verb forms. However, verbs ending in "-ieren" do not take the prefix "ge-" in their past participle forms.

Question 52
52. The idea that language learners can review their language production and adjust for errors is most closely associated with which of the following theories of second-language acquisition?
- Schumann's acculturation model
- Chomsky's innateness hypothesis
- Krashen's monitor hypothesis
- Selinker's theory of interlanguage
Answer to question 52
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: C. (Objective 0005) The monitor hypothesis is one of five hypotheses comprising Stephen Krashen's input hypothesis. Krashen posits that language learners are able to internally scan utterances for errors and use the system of learned rules to make connections before producing an utterance. Self-correction after an utterance is produced is also a product of the learner's "monitor."
Correct Response: C. (Objective 0005) The monitor hypothesis is one of five hypotheses comprising Stephen Krashen's input hypothesis. Krashen posits that language learners are able to internally scan utterances for errors and use the system of learned rules to make connections before producing an utterance. Question 53
53. Which of the following approaches would most likely accelerate a language learner's development of oral proficiency skills?
- using sociolinguistically appropriate phrases when responding to other speakers
- memorizing common language structures as a jump start to begin speaking
- using techniques such as circumlocution to compensate for lack of vocabulary
- responding with complete utterances to other speakers' questions
Answer to question 53
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: C. (Objective 0005) Being able to communicate effectively using various oral communication techniques such as circumlocution will likely lower a language learner's affective filter, raise the learner's level of confidence, and likely accelerate the learner's development of oral proficiency.
Correct Response: C. (Objective 0005) Being able to communicate effectively using various oral communication techniques such as circumlocution will likely lower a language learner's affective filter, raise the learner's level of confidence, and likely accelerate the learner's development of oral proficiency.
Question 54
54. In a classroom setting, which of the following strategies would most likely lower the affective filters of beginning-level language learners?
- focusing on expressive communication rather than grammatical accuracy
- having students self-monitor their comprehension of expressive language
- asking each student to contribute equally to class discussions
- making production of speech with a near-native accent a primary concern
Answer to question 54
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0005) In a classroom with a focus on communication rather than accuracy, language learners can feel comfortable taking risks and communicating freely, thus lowering affective filters. If a teacher corrects students frequently, it creates an environment in which students are inhibited and overly cautious about attempting new structures and vocabulary.
Correct Response: A.
Question 55
55. Which of the following examples of differences in spoken German best illustrates the use of formal and informal registers?
- The speech produced by native speakers is typically more fluent than that of language learners.
- The vocabulary and expressions vary among speakers in Germany and in other German-speaking countries.
- The grammatical structures used by adolescents are more complex than those used by young children.
- The language used in a university lecture is different from that used in a casual conversation.
Answer to question 55
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0005) Proficient speakers of a language know how to adjust the formality of their speech based on the sociocultural context of the situation. In this case, a university lecture would require a higher level of formality than would a casual conversation, in which informal language would be expected.
Correct Response: D. (Objective 0005) Proficient speakers of a language know how to adjust the formality of their speech based on the sociocultural context of the situation. In this case, a university lecture would require a higher level of formality than would a casual conversation, in which informal language would be expected.
Question 56
56. Which of the following factors would most effectively enhance a second-language learner's ability to acquire content knowledge in the target language?
- similarity of grammar between the learner's first language and the target language
- interest and personal motivation to learn the target language
- use of simplified reading materials in the target language
- prior knowledge of related vocabulary and subject matter in the first language
Answer to question 56
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0005) If a language learner already understands concepts and vocabulary related to a content area, those cognitive concepts easily transfer to the learning of the new vocabulary and knowledge in the second language. Having prior knowledge of the content would increase comprehension of the information in the new language.
Correct Response: D. (Objective 0005) If a language learner already understands concepts and vocabulary related to a content area, those cognitive concepts easily transfer to the learning of the new vocabulary and knowledge in the second language. Question 57
57. Which of the following best explains why heritage speakers are usually more proficient in casual social interactions than in the language classroom?
- Social language relies more heavily on personal interaction than does classroom language.
- Social language skills are not transferable to classroom contexts.
- Classroom language requires more use of negotiation of meaning and repair strategies than does social language.
- Classroom language tends to be more abstract and grammatically complex than social language.
Answer to question 57
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0005) Heritage speakers will often interact successfully in social contexts but less so in the classroom, where a consciousness of grammar rules and a controlled output of utterances is expected.
Correct Response: D. (Objective 0005) Heritage speakers will often interact successfully in social contexts but less so in the classroom, where a consciousness of grammar rules and a controlled output of utterances is expected.
Question 58
58. The main claim of the Critical Period Hypothesis is that:
- there is a biologically determined period in a person's life for language to be learned perfectly.
- second-language proficiency is determined by the time and effort put into the learning process regardless of age.
- when learning a second language, there is a period of silence when no output is to be expected.
- language development will be optimal during that period regardless of the input received.
Answer to question 58
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0005) The Critical Period Hypothesis emphasizes the role of the physiological development of the brain in language acquisition, claiming that certain neurons responsible for language development will be "pruned" early in life if not "exercised," and never recovered. Major evidence cited is adult difficulty in acquiring prosodic and pronunciation patterns as compared to younger learners.
Correct Response: A. (Objective 0005) The Critical Period Hypothesis emphasizes the role of the physiological development of the brain in language acquisition, claiming that certain neurons responsible for language development will be "pruned" early in life if not "exercised," and never recovered. Question 59
59. A German language learner who is a native English speaker says the following sentence in German: "Ich will gehen mit dir ins Kino." The error made by the speaker is due to:
- negative transfer.
- overgeneralization.
- fossilization.
- code-switching.
Answer to question 59
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: A. (Objective 0005) Language transfer (first-language interference or influence) is a major factor in language learning, and its results can have either a positive or a negative effect on second language acquisition. In this case, the speaker applies English word order (conjugated auxiliary verb "wollen" followed immediately by infinitive "gehen") to a German sentence, in which the infinitive should be placed at the end of the clause ("Ich will mit dir ins Kino gehen.").
Correct Response: A. (Objective 0005) Language transfer (first-language interference or influence) is a major factor in language learning, and its results can have either a positive or a negative effect on second language acquisition. Question 60
60. Which of the following options correctly transforms the sentence below from direct discourse to indirect discourse?
Der Journalist hat gesagt: »Ich schreibe keine guten Artikel mehr.«
- Der Journalist sagte, dass er keine guten Artikel mehr schriebte.
- Der Journalist sagte, dass er keine guten Artikel mehr schrieben würde.
- Der Journalist sagte, dass er keine guten Artikel mehr schreibe.
- Der Journalist sagte, dass er keine guten Artikel mehr geschreibt hat.
Answer to question 60
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: C. (Objective 0006) The journalist's direct statement "Ich schreibe keine guten Artikel mehr" is reported in the form of a dependent clause introduced by the conjunction "dass", with the first-person pronoun "ich" changed to the third person "er", and the conjugated verb moved to the end of the clause. To express indirect discourse, verbs are placed in the Subjunctive I mood. In the case of the third person singular, the Subjunctive I ("shreibe") is formed by adding the subjunctive ending, -e, to the infinitive stem of the verb ("schreib").
Correct Response: C. Question 61
61. Which of the following verb forms correctly completes the sentence below?
Hast du dir die Haare am Montag ________ leer ?
- geschnitten lassen
- schneiden lassen
- geschnitten gelassen
- schneiden gelassen
Answer to question 61
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: B. (Objective 0006) In this sentence, the verb "lassen" functions as a modal auxiliary. The dependent verb "schneiden" needs to be in the infinitive. The sentence is in the present perfect tense, and whenever a modal verb is used with a dependent verb, its past participle form is the same as the infinitive. Question 67
67. Which of the following phrases correctly completes the sentence below?
Ich konnte gestern nicht nach Frankfurt fahren, wenn ich doch nur nach Frankfurt ______ leer
- hätte gefahren gekonnt!
- gekonnt fahren hätte!
- fahren können hätte!
- hätte fahren können!
Answer to question 67
- Answer Enter to expand or collapse answer. Answer expanded
- Correct Response: D. (Objective 0006) The first part of the sentence is in the past tense and is in the indicative mood because it is stating a fact (that the speaker was not able to travel to Frankfurt yesterday). It is formed with an auxiliary modal verb ("können," past tense "konnte") and a dependent infinitive ("fahren"). The second part of the sentence is introduced with the expression "if only" ("wenn ich doch nur ..."), which means it is a wish ("if only I had been able to travel to Frankfurt yesterday") and must be in the subjunctive mood. Modal verbs with a dependent infinitive are formed in the present perfect with the construction "haben" + double infinitive. "Haben" must change into the subjunctive mood in this case, making the verb construction "ich ... hätte fahren können." Instead of the conjugated "haben" moving to the end of a dependent clause (introduced here with "wenn"), it precedes the present perfect modal + infinitive construction, which is in final position.
